La question de l'identité théologique traverse l'ensemble de l'Écriture sainte. Elle se pose avec une urgence particulière lors des situations de crise, qui peuvent aller jusqu'à mettre en péril l'existence même des communautés croyantes. Ainsi, l'exil à Babylone au VIe siècle avant notre ère, ou la confrontation du judaïsme avec le royaume séleucide, au IIe siècle, fournissent l'occasion de reformulations théologiques qui permettent d'énoncer la spécificité d'Israël, en s'appuyant sur les traditions héritées, mais également en définissant des catégories théologiques nouvelles. La destruction du temple de Jérusalem, en 70, conduit les communautés chrétiennes, qui se trouvent en situation critique, à se poser avec une acuité nouvelle la question de leur identité et à trouver les termes et les concepts qui permettent d'articuler l'héritage des traditions d'Israël, la nouveauté du Christ et la perspective de la mission universelle de l'Église. La question de l'identité revêt donc une pertinence dans l'ensemble du canon des Écritures et elle reçoit, à chaque époque, des réponses diversifiées et parfois concurrentes. Les contributions de cet ouvrage d'hommage au professeur Jacques Briend, rédigées par ses collègues et par ses élèves, cherchent à appréhender cette diversité des approches théologiques à l'intérieur du canon des Écritures. The question of theological identity runs through all of the Holy Scriptures. It is a burning issue in times of crisis, when the very existence of communities of believers can be at risk. So, the exile to Babylon in the 6th century BC, or Judaism's confrontation with the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BC, provide the occasion for theological reformulations which permit the proclamation of Israel's specificity, based on past traditional but also on newly-defined theological categories. The destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70AD led the Christian communities, who found themselves in a critical situation, to pose the question of their identity with a new urgency, and to find terms and concepts that would permit them to assume the heritage of the traditions of Israel, the newness of Christ and the perspective of the Church's universal mission. So the question of identity takes on an importance throughout the Scriptures and receives, in each age, different and sometimes conflicting responses. The contributions assembled in this book, a tribute to Professor Jacques Briend written by his colleagues and students, strive to grasp that diversity of theological approaches within the canon of the Scripture. The theological and pastoral opening proffered at the end of the book by Mgr Gérard Defois shows how theological debate, of which the Scriptures offer a mirror image, lights up ecclesiological reflection today.
